A Goodbye Letter to Harapan, the Sumatran Rhinoceros at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens

Wonder Boy and I visiting Harapan, a Sumatran rhinoceros at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens.Later this Fall, the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens is losing a special part of its family. Harapan, also known as Harry, is a Sumatan rhinoceros and the only one of his species outside of Southeast Asia. He’s also one of an estimated less than 100 left in the world.

I had the good fortune to meet Harry this past Spring. He’s eight-years-old (they have a lifespan of 35-40 years) and weighs about 1,800 pounds. Standing face-to-face with him is like looking back into prehistoric times. He’s hulking with thick skin and watery eyes and horns that look built of stone. And yet. When he spots food, he becomes single-minded in his focus. He’s playful! He oozes personality!

When Harry moves to the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Indonesia, he’ll join what remains of his species in the hopes of successful breeding. If it works, move people will have chances like I did to meet a Sumatran rhino. If not, the species goes away entirely.

No matter the outcome, I feel so much gratitude. Best of luck to you Harry! I hope you have endless amounts of food and playmates!

Keeping My Hair Healthy and Looking Good: A Review of Monat Haircare Products

I have a pretty lazy approach to my hair. I get it cut about every nine months. I often wash my hair at night to avoid blow drying. In the morning, if I feel up to it, I use a flatiron. Or, I just throw my hair in a ponytail. I know my hair could look better, but I’m not willing to invest the time.

When given given the opportunity to review some Monat haircare products, I figured it was my chance to step it up! With a little attention, maybe I could get my hair looking good!

When my samples arrived, the packing got my excited. It was like opening a gift!

Inside, was tons of loot!

This is a “Before” photo of my hair. It looks fine, right? Just not a lot of body to it.

Renew Shampoo and Conditioner by Monat

The first product I tried out was the Renew shampoo and conditioner. I was intrigued because the packaging said it would increase density, strength and manageability. I don’t know if it gave my hair a ton more volume, but it did leave it really soft and light!

Revitalize Conditioner by Monat

Next I tried the Revitalize conditioner by Monat. It promised, and delivered, volume. And I liked that I could just leave it in while doing my regular shower routine and then rinse it out, versus leaving it in for an extended period of time. The results? I was amazed. I’m not used to a conditioner doing much besides making it easier for me to get a comb through my hair. This, combined with my regular daily shampoo, gave my hair a ton more volume!

Replenish Products by Monat

I definitely stalled on trying out the products that took more time. I cannot reiterate enough how little time I am willing to invest in my hair. The Replenish products by Monat sounded good, though. Brilliance, strength and vitality. Those aren’t words I typically associate with my hair, but they sound great! The conditioning masque was slightly more time intensive, as I had to leave it in long enough to do it’s thing. Afterwards, my hair felt great. I’ve gotten conditioning treatments at salons before and this was equally as good if not better, and I did it right at home.

Rejuvenique Oil Intensive

The final product I tried was Rejuvenique oil intensive. I have no after pictures because those can’t really convey feeling of how soft it made my hair. The downside to my typically lazy hair routine is that I often have dry, split ends. Rejuvenique didn’t completely undo the damage, but pretty darn close!

The Verdict

It can be weird when I review a product on here. I want to be honest in my review and only praise products I feel are worth it.The Monat hair care systems were easy to review because I enjoyed using all of them. The Rejuvenique oil intensive was a definite winner, despite taking the longest to do and going against my low-maintenance style. I also loved the Revitalize conditioner because it worked so well with my existing shampoo. It’s changed how I think about conditioner.

If you’re interested in giving your hair a makeover, I’d recommend looking at the Monat line of products. It’s worth treating yourself, and your hair, to a little luxury!

The Ground Beneath My Feet

When I walk around town, I make myself look up so I can admire roof lines and old architecture. But sometimes I need to better appreciate my view looking down.

Flight of the Bumblebee

In gardens around the city I see these big bumblebees slowly making their way from one plant to the next. Here’s a video I took last week of one bumblebee hanging out on a sunflower.

Four Poolside / Beachside Books from 2015

While on vacation last week, I read four books, all published in 2015 and all good reads for some time at the beach or swimming pool.

Funny Girl by Nick Hornby.Funny Girl by Nick Hornby

When I read Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted: And all the Brilliant Minds Who Made The Mary Tyler Moore Show a Classic by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, it informed some of my television memories. When I read Funny Girl by Nick Hornby, it was absolutely informed by Armstrong’s book. How could it not be?

In Funny Girl, Sophie Straw navigates the journey from unknown to television starlet within a very short span of time. Her television career skyrockets and, though she ends up with a long, successful career, her greatest success is her first success. Set in the 1960’s, Funny Girl is as much about that time period as it is television of the time period and the cast of Barbara (and Jim), Straw’s television show.

I like Nick Horby. He creates flawed characters that I end up loving. His books don’t always stick with me, but fur the duration of each novel, I am his.

As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust by Alan BradleyAs Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust by Alan Bradley

I’m a sucker for packaging, and the style – from artwork to physical size – of As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust by Alan Bradley is just adorable. Adorable!

In As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust, Flavia is sent away from England to boarding school in Canada at Miss Bodycote’s Female Academy. The school is her mother’s alma mater and she knows that while there she will be there to be inducted into a mysterious organization known as the Nide, but has no fuirther details.

On FLavia’s first night in her new room at her new school, a body comes crashing down her chimney. Liking science and mysteries, she starts investigating the identity of the body as well as the disappearances of other girls at her school.

I think this series is for young adults. It reads like Pippi Longstocking for slightly older readers (which I mean as the highest of compliments). Bradley’s style is engaging and there is quirk aplenty to keep readers surprised. Highly recommend.

This is part of a series, the Flavia de Luce series, and I look forward to checking out more of Bradley’s books.

I received a copy of As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust by Alan Bradley free as part of GoodRead’s First Reads program.

Speaking in Bones by Kathy Reichs.Speaking in Bones by Kathy Reichs

I’m equally loyal to the television show Bones as I am to the Kathy Reichs series on which the show is based – I’ve seen all episodes and read all books. The latest installment in the book series, Speaking in Bones, is the 18th book but still as entertaining as the first. I view these books like a big snack. They’re not there to make me smarter (though factoids are conspicuously inserted throughout each novel) or to help me grow as a person. They are just pure entertainment!

In the installment of the Bones series, forensic anthropologist Temperence Brennan works alongside an amateur sleuth named Hazel “Lucky” Strike. Lucky is pursuing what she believes to be the murder of eighteen-year-old Cora Teague. But the bones don’t match up, which leads Brennan down a path of murder and adventure. (All of the books lead down a path of murder and adventure.)

For other readers of the series, the roller coaster ride that is the love life of Brennan and Andrew Ryan continues. As of course it should.

It’s not hard to critiques these books but it’s so much more fun to just consume them.

Life After Life by Kate Atkinson.Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

For book club this month we selected Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book quite like this one. Atkinson tells the story of Ursula Todd and her family starting in 1910. Although the story continues on on to near present, Ursula dies many times over. As do most of the other characters.

It’s like Atkinson is presenting to us the power of choice. Do this and things end one way. Make another choice and get another outcomes. The change in choice is often quite small and the outcome quite drastic.

There were a few parts early in Life After Life when I was confused but once I caught on to what Atkinson was doing… Well, I just wanted more.
