Amongst my many fears is a fear of creepy things living in the water I am swimming in. For many, many years I would not enter the ocean without wearing aqua socks. (Aqua socks, for those of you who don’t recall, are half sock, half shoe and have rubber bottoms and mesh tops so that you can wear them in the water but they dry off quickly.) Even in the (very short) day of aqua socks though, never did I think them cool. They were merely a means to an end so that I could enjoy the ocean.

In the late 80s aqua socks came in a wild variety of neon hues. You rarely see aqua socks anymore.

Or so I thought.

Today at lunch I saw a woman, a supposed professional, wearing aqua socks with her work outfit. To her credit, the neon green and aqua stripes of the socks did match her outfit. But really…

(I guess it gives explanation to the curious rule listed in my department’s dress code of “no beachwear.”)
