A few years back my friend Jenny and I created singles ads for AOL. We did mostly as a lark and would laugh over the funny inquiries our ads generated like “I want to be up front about the fact that I am married. But, I am looking.”

The best though were people who would respond and include links to their own personal web sites – that’s where there was a mother load of ridiculous stuff. There were two boys in particular who stand out. One was a model and included all of his headshots on his web site to impress the ladies. (Didn’t work.) The other guys had just random facts about him and his friends – it was a very fun site actually. But the best part was under his bio where he listed his nicknames. The best one: Straight Guy.

Okay, so here’s the thing. I think if you have a nickname like straight guy, you probably aren’t. Is that cynical of me? Sorry, I just think it’s dumb.

What got me thinking about all of this was a license plate I saw the other day that read “MALE 5.” First of all, I think that’s a dumb personalized plate. Secondly, here’s my theory on what it means: “Hey World! It took me five tries, but the surgeries finally worked and now I am a male!!!”
